Do I need any special certification to become a financial analyst?I'm a year away from graduating with a BS in accounting, I am aware you need 150 credits and to pass the CPA exam for you to actually be marketable. No, you don't need a certification to be a FA. You need a demonstrated ability to think critically and handle data. Excel skill is a must (Pivot Tables, Index, Match, Offset, IF, etc.) and knowledge of other database tools (Access, SQL, etc.) is a plus. The key to the whole thing is what are the duties and responsibilities of the position. Different companies may have different definitions for the title. If you want to be an Analyst and stay away from the hardcore Accounting roles (i. e. doing account reconciliations), I would study Finance. There is a reason why those Accounting majors got their jobs so quick, and thats because there is a lot of turnover in the Accounting field. Everyone in Corporate America wants to do the really cool stuff like Mergers and Acquisitions and Financial Planning and Analysis, but there are only so many jobs out there.... |
